I would consider myself a holistic medicine acolyte, having had little or no exposure to this area of medicine previous to my first aromatherapy session a few months ago. As far as I knew, aromatherapy was just about waving bottles of perfume under your nose to produce miraculous cures and improvements in well-being! My first session, in Brighton, UK, was a revelation. I was suffering from a sore back and decided a "massage with aromatherapy" session sounded like a good idea, and it would be a good introduction to aromatherapy too.

I think the oils used were bergamot, lavender and rosemary. The masseuse quickly discovered that I had a *very* tense back, with two particular areas of knotted muscle in my back. It was a bit painful as she worked on these areas, but afterwards I felt like I had a new back! I found the stimulating effects of the oils wonderful, too - they had much more of an effect than I imagined. I remember virtually skipping around the streets of Brighton!

I learned a lot about aromatherapy in that session too, such as the fact that the body actually absorbs the effects of the oils through the skin, as well as breathing in the vapours through the nose, and that the choice of oils is much more scientific than I had imagined.

The masseuse recommended I had a few more sessions, as my back was too tense to sort out in one go. I had 3 or 4 sessions with a different clinic, and the effects on my back and general well-being were very positive. I would recommend an aromatherapy massage to anyone who wants to improve both their physical and mental health - it is truly a holistic therapy.
