In 1994 life was sailing along nicely - I was a housewife, married, and my husband and I had one daughter and lived in a villa divided into two. Then in February of '94 my husband died suddenly, my daughter was studying in Sweden and I was left to look after a big house which, six months later, I discovered had horrendous dry and wet rot in it.
As I didn’t have the money to just ‘phone a firm and have them put it to rights I was left to do what I could myself. I was lucky enough to find a wonderful joiner, or carpenter, as it’s known in the U.S. and he and I came to a money arrangement which suited us both, and for the next eight years he and I and my downstairs neighbours – for rot is no respecter of persons – worked to put the place to rights.
A long introduction but this is how I started in Bowen - my joiner really hurt his arm by making pillars for the entrance to the house and he couldn’t work for about five months – by this time we had finished with the dry rot and were now working outside. A friend of his told us that a neighbour of his was doing a new therapy called Bowen and using him for a guinea pig and it had helped his sore back so it might help Robert. Knowing he had hurt his arm on my behalf I took Robert to see this lady. About ten days before this I suddenly found that I couldn’t use my left arm (right hand drive)to change the gears in the car – had to use my right hand – (synchronicity or what?) so I thought I would have a session as well.
To cut a long story short it immediately helped Robert’s arm and I found I could now start using my left hand again to change gears; but not only that I found that I was sleeping better, waking earlier and more refreshed, and could get through the day without being so tired in the evening. A very holistic therapy and I thought to myself I’m going to learn what this is about. So in 2000 I started the course and have been a practitioner since 2002, and I find that everyone who comes to get help with their problems is amazed at how such a seemingly simple therapy can transform their lives.
