cat says:
I suffered from depression for 4 years, before being referred for cognitive therapy on the NHS.
During the sessions, the therapist would ask me to talk about my life and ask me how I felt about certain events. I would often respond very negatively. The therapist would then ask me if there was any other way of looking at this event. My initial response was always no, but after a while I began to see that I could look on things differently, and that I often felt better about myself if I did choose to believe these "alternative" thoughts.
I attended sessions every 2-3 weeks for about a year, until I was feeling much much better about my life and myself and decided to stop attending.
I am happy to say now, that I am almost completely free of depression. I still occasionally feel down (like most people), but it no longer gets to the stage where I'm suffering physical symptoms, and I always remember to use the cognitive therapy to pull me back towards feeling good again. Cognitive therapy worked for me, and gave me the means to overcome my depressive episodes.
